Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel Laureate, donned several hats, including poet, playwright, novelist, composer, philosopher, painter, and social reformer. He revolutionised Bengali literature and music, earning him the nickname "The Bard of Bengal." He was also one of the builders of contemporary India, having played a key part in the Indian cultural renaissance.

His writings have been translated into a variety of languages including English, German, Dutch, Spanish, and other European languages. Not only that, but his work also influenced the national anthems of India and Bangladesh, as well as Sri Lanka.  

He began writing at the age of eight and by the age of sixteen had published his first major poetry. He was born in a Bengali Brahmin household in Calcutta.

Rabindranath Tagore was born on the 25th Baishakh, 1268, in Bengali calendar (May 7, 1861, in Gregorian calendar) at Jorasanko palace of Calcutta, then in British India. He was the youngest of the 13 surviving children of Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi.

In 1921, he envisioned and created the Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan, with the goal of spreading the practise of culture and literature across the world and producing future artists and literateurs.

Tagore was the first Bengali and non-European poet to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his anthology of lyrical ballads, ‘Gitanjali' (Song Offerings).

He died on August 7, 1941, at the age of 80, putting an end to a lengthy period of agony.
