Social media ‘hair-straightening act’ goes wrong, 12-year-old Kerala boy dies after catching fire

YouTube is filled with tips and tricks and various tutorial videos that teach people new ways to get something done for themselves. Though these videos can seem promising in achieving what you want, but many times unprofessional advice can do more harm than good as no attempt is made to warn viewers of possible dangers and risks. 

In a shocking incident reported from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, a 12-year-old boy died after attempting a hair-straightening act using Kerosene oil and a lit matchstick. The young boy was trying to imitate a YouTube video. 

According to police, the act went wrong and the boy died of burns that he sustained during the act.

The boy who is in 7th grade applied kerosene oil to his hair and tried straightening it with fire, the police report said. The boy was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later.

The boy tried imitating the act in the bathroom and only his grandmother was at home.

Videos of people straightening hair using spirit and fire had gone viral on social media, which poses serious dangers as the spirit catches fire immediately. The people who film these acts take precautions and perform these acts after a lot of practice. But when children try to imitate these acts, they are playing with fire and posing danger to their lives.
