After a sudden GST raid on a mobile shop in Jalandhar’s Phagwara Gate market sparked protests and shop closures, AAP’s Jalandhar Central Halka Incharge and industrialist Nitin Kohli, currently abroad, issued a strong statement of solidarity with the business community.
Expressing regret for not being present during the raid, Kohli assured that upon his return to India, he would personally meet the affected traders and GST officials to understand both perspectives and push for a practical, fair resolution.
“I am presently abroad, so I couldn’t help the businessmen at the time of the raid,” said Kohli, adding, “But as soon as I return to India, I will meet with the affected traders and GST officials to understand the issues from both sides.”
He assured that the AAP government is fully supportive of traders and small shopkeepers, saying, "As an industrialist myself, I stand with the business community. AAP Government has already introduced several trader-friendly policies aimed at boosting local businesses, from small vendors to large retailers.”
Kohli emphasized that he will personally meet the minister concerned with GST enforcement and seek a practical resolution. "Our government will not allow any kind of injustice. I will ensure fair treatment and help implement solutions that support business growth."
“I have always stood with the traders, and I will continue to do so. I will not allow any officer or department to intimidate or harass traders. The dignity and safety of the business community is my top priority — any injustice against them will not be tolerated," added Nitin Kohli.
Kohli stated that the AAP government, under CM Bhagwant Mann, has already ended the outdated 'Inspector Raj', and continues to bring in policies that support ease of doing business. “From street vendors to major traders, we are committed to protecting every stakeholder's interest,” he asserted.
In June 2025, the Bhagwant Mann Government approved a major amendment to the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958, aimed at reducing compliance burdens on 95% small businesses and enhancing the ease of doing business in the state.
During a press briefing, CM Mann had shared the details with the media following a cabinet meeting, stating that the move will end the longstanding "Inspector Raj" and bring major relief to small traders across the state.
On the abolition of the Inspector Raj, Nitin Kohli had said, "This has been a long-standing demand of our small traders. Previously, inspectors would harass business owners daily, asking for different documents. Now, inspectors can visit only once every six months, either at the trader’s office or the trader may visit the inspector's office if required."
