Twitter appoints US Employee as Grievance officer amid tussle with Centre over IT Rules

Twitter has appointed Global Legal Policy Director, Jeremy Kessel as the grievance officer. However, as per the new IT Rules, an Indian resident was required for the role.

Amid a battle with the government, Twitter has appointed its new grievance officer for India to follow the new IT rules 2021, for social networking websites, by the central government. 

Twitter has appointed Global Legal Policy Director, Jeremy Kessel as the grievance officer. However, as per the new IT Rules, an Indian resident was required for the role. 

This decision was out, a day after social media giant's interim grievance officers, who was appointed less than a month ago, resigned from the post, amid the firm’s month-long quarrel with the central government.

Mr Dharmendra Chatur, who was a partner at a law firm that represented Twitter was appointed as the interim grievance officer. Twitter informed about the same to the Delhi High Court on May 31. But the centre denied and said that it would not accept the appointment of an outsider for the role. 

On Saturday (June 26), Mr Chatur resigned. On the same day, the social media company removed his name as a grievance officer, as required under Information Technology Rules 2021. 

Recently, in mid-June Twitter appointed an interim Chief Compliance Officer, under the new IT rules. It said that the details would be directly shared by the Ministry of Information and Technology.

Under the guidelines of new IT rules, the government wants the appointment of India-based compliance executives and other conditions. The government also aims to regulate the content posted on the social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, making them accountable for the user-generated content.”

On this, critics have raised concerns that Twitter may no longer enjoy protection against user-generated content.
