In the paramount of human cruelty, a wild elephant who strayed into the human habitat in Tamil Nadu was killed after resort workers threw a burning tyre on it. The elephant was killed by the staff of a private resort in Masinagudi in Nilgiris district. Going by the various media reports, forest officials said the badly injured elephant, with bleeding in its ears, was found by some forest department guards in Masinagudi, but it died before it could be taken for treatment to a facility at the Mudumalai forest range. On conducting an autopsy, officials realised that severe injuries had been caused because of the burns.

Going by the reports of Indian Express, the Tamil Nadu forest department has arrested two people for causing grievous injury to a 40-year-old elephant near Masinagudi in Nilgiris district. 

The news agency also quoted LCS Srikanth, director, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (Buffer Zone), who said, "Three people were found to have been involved in this incident. We have arrested two, including the owner of a resort; and are on the lookout for the third person. As per the information we have, the incident took place on January 3, around midnight. One of the accused was under the influence of alcohol. The two accused were arrested under section 9 of the Wildlife Protection Act."
