Microsoft has been teasing the ‘next generation of Windows’ for months. But now, the company next week will reveal the awaited makeover of the Windows Operating System. The Redmond-based software will unveil the ‘next generation of Windows’ at a virtual event on June 24.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has already shared a teaser and revealed major enhancements to the PC operating system for developers and creators as well. On May 25, CEO Satya Nadella said, “Microsoft is planning one of the most significant updates of Windows of the past decade.”

There are rumours that this major redesign might be called Windows 11. Here are all the details like the release date and what to expect from the upcoming update.

Release Date:

Microsoft is to announce ‘the next generation of Windows’ on June 12 in a virtual event to be held at 11 am ET. CEO Nadella will be present at the event along with Panos Panay, Microsoft’s chief product officer, has been the face of the company’s Surface devices.

However, we only know the date of the announcement. There is no detail available on the release of ‘next generation of Windows’. So far, the name of the new operating system is also guessed. Microsoft had released Windows 10 in 2015 and made it clear that this would be ‘the last version of Windows'. So, it is unlikely that the new update would be called Windows 11. However, some people are still speculating that Windows 11 may happen.

Whatever, Microsoft names its new update, we know that the company needs to beta test the nit with Windows Insiders before releasing it to manufacturers and the general public.

Start Menu

The Window 11 start menu looks very similar to what was originally found in Windows 10X. However, it's been simplified which means no more live tiles. You can see standard icons that show pinned apps recommended apps and files.

Taskbar

The biggest visual change will be noticed in the taskbar. The taskbar is placed in the centre and features the start menu, default icons and search bar similar to Chrome OS. There will also, be a dedicated button to add widgets.

File explorer icons

Microsoft is using rounded corners throughout Windows 11 which are visible in context menus and apps and the File Explorer. Also, the folder icons are more playful and colourful, and the animation looks and feels fluid.
