After the first day was canceled owing to relentless rain, the inaugural World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand eventually began. After New Zealand invited India to bat, openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave India a great start. India lost the tandem before lunch, despite counter-attacking in the first hour.

It's never easy for sub-continent batsmen to adjust to English Test conditions with cricket balls they're not used to, especially if they're the opener. Shubman Gill, India's opening batsman, has emphasized the significance of 'intent' ahead of the WTC final against New Zealand, admitting that it will be the most important match of his career. The tough opener has already wowed the cricketing world with his calm demeanor in both Australia and against England at home, and the same is expected of him in his debut international tenure in England.

Shubman stated his objective is to maintain the run-scoring intent flowing and not feel the strain of expectations when it comes to the mindset of getting runs. "Your desire to score runs in England, in my opinion, should never be put on hold. When you're trying to score runs, the bowlers go backward, allowing you to put some pressure on them. If all you want to do is survive, you'll get more excellent balls (bowled at you) "Shubman made a point.

He hit a brilliant 85 in a recent intra-team match simulation in Southampton, earning him a spot in the 15-man Indian squad for the final and practically ensuring his status as the opener.

Earlier in the day, Tim Southee bowled the opening ball of the World Test Championship final down the leg-side, and it set the tone for the remainder of the session. Under gloomy skies and a gleaming, new Dukes ball, New Zealand took their time to hit the perfect lines and lengths, giving India a decent look. It showed in the way Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill put on 62 runs for the first wicket until both of them succumbed to edging deliveries outside off-stump towards the close of the session, signalling a shift in the trend and balance.
