Born in Pakistan's Sargodha before partition of India, ML Khetarpal retired from the Indian Army from Brigadier post.
He visited Lahore in 2001 as he was an alumni of Lahore Govt College. He went to Pakistan to attend Lahore Govt College Students' Reunion. It was during that time a retired Pakistani Army officer confessed to him that he killed his 21-year-old son during Battle of Basantar.
Retd. Pakistani Brigadier Khwaja Mohammed Naseer met him at the college reunion and requested him to stay at his home during his time in Pakistan. Thereafter, one day, Naseer confessed that it was a shell from his tank that took the life of Arun Khetarpal. Naseer also admitted that it was due to Arun's valour that day that Pakistan lost the battle as he continued to stand at the font-line in his tank.
The character of Khwaja Mohammed Naseer is played by Bollywood actor Jaideep Ahlawat.
