
After heavy rains lashed Jalandhar for more than 72 hours, the combined efforts of Jalandhar Municipal Corporation under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal have brought relief to residents with normalcy gradually returning in routine affairs.
Following directions issued by Punjab Government, the district administration and civic authorities worked in mission mode to clear waterlogging, repair potholes and provide timely assistance to people whose homes were inundated with rainwater.
Teams led by Commissioner Municipal Corporation Sandeep Rishi, Joint Commissioners Dr. Mandeep Kaur and Sumandeep Kaur launched a coordinated strategy to minimize inconvenience and keep the city moving.
To deal with the waterlogging, six SDOs along with 10 JEs were deputed to monitor the situation across different areas during the heavy downpour. A workforce of 375 Municipal Corporation employees was pressed into service for cleaning blocked road gullies to ensure smooth disposal of rainwater.
Likewise, the operation was further supported with 14 tractors, two suction tankers, five sullage pumps and six super suction machines deployed across vulnerable points.
Similarly, six new mud pumps were put into service to further improve the situation. In another development, the MCJ have cleared inundated Subhana Railway Under Bridge aiming at resumption of traffic movement at this busiest point. The authorities have also ensures necessary and timely assistance to people in case of roof collapsed.
Gensets were also kept available at all STPs to ensure uninterrupted working of pumping stations.
Meanwhile, tubewells were chlorinated, and door-to-door water sampling was conducted to ensure safe drinking water. Awareness drives were also held to promote hygiene and prevent waterborne diseases. Water tankers were arranged in affected localities, while continuous fogging was carried out to prevent mosquito breeding.
