A 21-year-old BA final-year student died after falling from a high-rise residential building in Jalandhar, leaving her family in shock. The incident was reported at Jalandhar Heights on 66 Feet Road on Saturday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Mahakpreet Kaur, a student of APJ College. Police said the initial investigation indicates that the incident may have been a case of suicide, although the circumstances surrounding her death are still being investigated.
Family Says She Was Taking Medication for Depression
According to the family, Mahakpreet had been taking medication for depression. They told police that she had gone for a walk in the morning and later moved towards the balcony area of the building before the fatal incident.
Her mother reportedly found her and immediately took her to the Civil Hospital in an attempt to save her. However, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police have not found any suicide note so far.
Police Examine Mobile Phone and Scene
Jalandhar Heights police post in-charge Jasvir Chand said the student had suffered serious internal injuries. Police reached the location and examined the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Her mobile phone was also taken into custody and examined as part of the preliminary investigation. Police said no suspicious material was found on the device during the initial examination, after which it was handed back to the family.
Investigators are continuing to examine other possible circumstances and evidence related to the incident.
No Academic Failure Reported by Family
The family described Mahakpreet as a bright student and said there was no known issue related to academic failure.
Police also said that, so far, there was no indication that she had failed any examination or was facing an immediate academic setback.
Her sudden death has therefore left relatives and friends searching for answers about what may have led to the tragedy.
Family Background
Mahakpreet came from a family based in Jalandhar. Her father runs a sports shoe shop in Attari Bazaar. She had an elder sister, who is pursuing her studies in Bengaluru, and a younger brother who is currently in Class 10.
The family has announced that her last rites will be performed at the Model Town cremation ground.
Police Begin Proceedings Under Section 174
SHO Sadar Jalandhar Sanjeev Suri said police are proceeding on the basis of the family’s statement under Section 174 of the CrPC.
According to the police, the preliminary evidence points towards suicide, but the investigation is still underway. Officers examined the scene and searched for any note or other evidence that could explain the circumstances leading to the death.

With no suicide note recovered and the family citing ongoing treatment for depression, investigators are expected to examine all available evidence before reaching a final conclusion.
