A man was shot and injured in Khanowal village of Kapurthala district on Monday afternoon after he allegedly objected to two motorcycle-borne men urinating near his settlement.
The injured man has been identified as Rehmat Ali, a resident of a Gujjar dera in Khanowal and he was rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
According to police, the incident took place near the Gujjar dera when two men arrived on a motorcycle and allegedly began urinating near the settlement.
Rehmat Ali reportedly objected to their act, following which an argument broke out between them.
Police said that during the argument, the two suspects allegedly took out a pistol and opened fire at Rehmat Ali and the accused then fled the spot on their motorcycle.
After receiving information about the firing, a police team reached the spot and started an investigation. SP (D) Harinder Singh and DSP Sub-Division Sheetal Singh were among the officers who visited the location.
DSP Sheetal Singh said that a spent cartridge was recovered from the scene and police also said that preliminary investigation indicated that three shots were fired during the incident.
The police are examining CCTV footage from cameras installed in the surrounding area to identify and trace the two suspects and a case has been registered against two accused persons at Sadar police station. Police are continuing their investigation to establish the circumstances of the firing and trace the suspects.
The injured man remains under treatment at a private hospital in Jalandhar.
