Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal on Thursday directed officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to immediately clear waterlogging from highways, particularly slip roads in city areas, to provide relief to commuters during the monsoon season.
Reviewing the progress of the Punjab Road Cleanliness Mission at a meeting held at the District Administrative Complex, the Deputy Commissioner expressed concern over reports of rainwater accumulation at several locations along NHAI stretches. He said such blockages cause major inconvenience to the public and must be resolved on priority.
Dr. Aggarwal asked the officials of NHAI to check and clean rainwater chambers along highways passing through Jalandhar to ensure proper drainage and uninterrupted flow of water. He categorically directed them to monitor slip roads, which often remain submerged during heavy rains, restricting public access and smooth traffic flow.
Highlighting that 51 road stretches in the district have been adopted by senior officials under the Punjab Road Cleanliness Mission launched by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Deputy Commissioner said these areas would witness a major facelift and infrastructural improvements in the coming days. He further directed officials to make regular visits to the stretches under their jurisdiction and take proactive measures to maintain them. He further asked them to visit their adopted roads at least thrice a week and share pictures of their visits and action taken by them.
Dr. Aggarwal reiterated that the district administration was committed to maintaining better road conditions and ensuring hassle-free travel for residents.
