Jalandhar has launched the Punjab government’s 10-day ‘Clean Punjab’ campaign with a cleanliness drive at Nakodar Chowk. Cabinet Minister Mohinder Bhagat, Mayor Vaneet Dhir, Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia, AAP Jalandhar Central Halka In-Charge Nitin Kohli, Municipal Corporation employees and other officials participated in the drive.
Nitin Kohli joined the cleanliness drive and swept the streets along with the Minister, Mayor, DC and Municipal Corporation teams and the campaign focuses on improving cleanliness in the city and encouraging residents to take responsibility for keeping public spaces clean.
Minister Mohinder Bhagat said he took to the streets as part of the ‘Clean Punjab’ campaign and said garbage would not be allowed to remain on roads or in localities. According to him, the campaign will continue for 10 days and will be carried out across different areas.
Mayor Vaneet Dhir said the 10-day ‘Clean Punjab’ mission has been launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and the Local Bodies Minister and said the Municipal Corporation, administration and sanitation teams would work together during the campaign.
Dhir also appealed to residents not to litter roads and public places and said keeping the surroundings clean is important for preventing diseases and improving the city’s overall environment.
Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia urged residents to support the campaign by separating wet and dry waste at home and residents have been asked to keep the two types of waste separate before handing them over to Municipal Corporation teams.
Officials said the cleanliness campaign would require cooperation from residents along with the efforts of sanitation workers and civic authorities and also pointed out that garbage is sometimes thrown on roads and outside shops despite regular sanitation work. The administration and police are also working to create awareness among residents about cleanliness and dustbins have been placed at some locations, while special marshals have been deployed to discourage people from dumping garbage at night.
The campaign also focuses on waste segregation at homes and business establishments. Residents have been urged to hand over segregated wet and dry waste to Municipal Corporation teams instead of dumping it on roads or in open areas.
The civic authorities said public participation would be important for the campaign to achieve its objective and the 10-day drive is aimed at improving cleanliness across Jalandhar and encouraging residents to treat the city’s public spaces with the same responsibility as their homes.
