Ludhiana ranks 39th in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Survey; Know the reason behind city's low ranking

On July 17, 2025, President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 awards to states and cities that displayed exemplary performance. Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 was conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Multiple cities of Punjab also featured in the list. Notably, the survey divided the list based on population. In cities with over 10 lakh population, Ahmedabad ranked number 1. It means Ahmedabad is the cleanest city of India.

Notably, the rankings included a total of 44 cities of India with over 10 lakh population. On number 39 was Ludhiana. In the last year survey, Ludhiana was still at 39. In the state, Ludhiana ranked 144th.

Vijayawada ranked 44th on the list.

What did Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 find about Ludhiana?

In the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, Ludhiana scored zero in waste generation vs processing and dump site remediation.

Not only this, but Ludhiana's performance in source segregation was also poor. It only received 6 percent marks.

However, Ludhiana performed well in other criterias that helped it maintain its ranking.

For instance, it scored 97 percent in the cleanliness of residential areas and 89 percent in door-to-door waste collection. Market areas also showed remarkable upkeep with a 93 percent score.

Ludhiana Mayor reacts to city's poor rankings

Ludhiana Mayor Inderjeet Kaur was quoted by HT saying in which she assured the people that in the coming days door-to-door collection of waste, source segregation of garbage and cleanliness would further improve.

Mayor Inderjeet Kaur further revealed that the project for bio-remediation of legacy waste is already going on at a fast pace and heaps of garbage at the main dump site of MC on Tajpur road would soon be a thing of the past.

Under the first phase of this project, over 4.5 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste (out of total 5 lakh metric tonnes) has already been disposed of through bioremediation. The contract for the second phase of the project, wherein around 20 lakh metric tonnes of waste has to be disposed of, has also been awarded. Around nine-acre land has been freed from waste at the main dump site of the civic body.
