More legal trouble for Punjab DIG Bhullar, CBI files FIR in disproportionate asset case

In a major development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a disproportionate assets case against suspended Punjab DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar. The case was filed on Wednesday based on a complaint from Chandigarh CBI Inspector Sonal Mishra. The investigation has been assigned to Chandigarh CBI officer Kuldeep Singh.

The complaint states that Bhullar, in collusion with unknown individuals, acquired assets disproportionate to his income. Bhullar was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the disproportionate assets.

On October 16th, the Bhullar was arrested in a bribery case along with middleman Krishanu Sharda. Krishanu Sharda on October 29 was sent to 9 days of CBI remand.

The official complaint reads, "A regular case no. RC0052025A0019 dated 16.10.2025 was registered U/s 61(2) BNS 2023and Section 7 & 7A of PC Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Sh.Harcharan Singh Bhullar, IPS, DIG (Ropar Range), Punjab Police and Sh. Kirshanu, Private Person on the basis of complaint dated 11.10.2025 of Sh.Akash Batta r/o Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab and verification report dated 15.10.2025.

Accordingly, a trap was laid, during which accused Kirshanu, middleman was caught red handed while accepting the bribe amount of RS. 5 lakh from complainant, on behalf of accused H.S Bhullar. Subsequently, Harcharan Singh Bhullar, IPS, the then DIG (Ropar Range) and middleman Kirshanu were arrested for demanding and accepting illegal gratification of Rs. 5 lakh from complainant Akash Batta."

What did the CBI seize during raid?

The FIR further reads that during the raids at Bhullar's house in Chandigarh, "..cash amounting to Rs. 7,36,90,000/- was recovered..Further, Gold Jewellery & silver items for total value of Rs. 2,32,07,686/- (from the bedroom of Harcharan Singh Bhullar), 26 Branded & expensive watches were also recovered."
