Punjab is all set to witness a round of Municipal Corporation elections likely to be held in the month of February for nice Municipal Corporations, i.e., Mohali, Hoshiarpur, Moga, Bathinda, Batala, Kapurthala, Abohar, Pathankot and the newly upgraded Municipal Corporation of Barnala along with 116 Nagar Councils.
These elections are going to be especially important and be proven as a ‘litmus test’ for all the parties keeping in view that the 2027 state assembly polls are approaching. It is noteworthy that these urban centres play a crucial role in shaping the political framework of the region. Issues such as infrastructure, sanitation, employment, law and order and civic governance remain the hot topics of the discussion and these issues are expected to have great influence on the campaigning.
The Municipal Elections were held earlier in Patiala, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Phagwara. Similarly, the zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections were also held last year, where AAP proved to be leading the charge. The recent pattern has proved AAP’s grassroot level presence. AAP has proven itself in the rural local body polls and now they have their eyes set on the urban victory.
On Thursday, APP has taken a big step and made a major reshuffle in its State Cabinet. The Local Bodies Department was handed over to Sanjeev Arora, which was earlier headed by Dr Ravjot Singh. This move seems to be an effort made by the government to improve its position and hold in urban areas, keeping in mind Arora’s exceptional performance and an impressive track record.
