RTI activist Simranjit Singh from Jalandhar was shot dead near Law Gate of Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara
According to initial information unidentified assailants opened fire on Simranjit Singh near Law Gate and he reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died on the spot and after carrying out the attack the accused fled from the scene.
Soon after the incident locals informed the police following which SP Madhvi Sharma reached the spot along with police teams and began an investigation and senior police officials inspected the crime scene and collected evidence and as of now police have taken custody of the body and started the required legal procedures.
The body is expected to be sent for a post-mortem examination.
The motive behind the attack is not yet known and an inquiry into the case is underway and efforts are being made to identify and trace the attackers. At present police have not released details about the suspects or the reason behind the shooting and further information is expected as investigation progresses.
DIG Naveen Singla later shared details about the case and said that police received information about a body being found within jurisdiction of Police Station Satnampura and when police teams reached the spot and carried out an investigation the deceased was identified as Simranjit Singh an RTI activist from Jalandhar.
The DIG said that a .32 bore pistol was recovered from crime scene and in addition a 12 bore rifle was found inside a Fortuner vehicle present at the location. Police have registered a case and started a detailed investigation into the incident and the Counter-Intelligence wing has also been involved in the probe to assist in gathering evidence and identifying those responsible.
Officials are examining CCTV footage from surrounding area to trace sequence of events and identify suspects while in the meanwhile police are also looking into all possible angles related to the case.
