Adampur was chosen by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for launching the ‘Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Scheme’ and the decision is being seen as more than just administrative, with clear political signals behind it.
Adampur, in Punjab’s Doaba region, is considered an important constituency because of its large Dalit population. This voter group plays a major role in deciding election results in the area.
In the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, Adampur was won by the Indian National Congress and the party also had a strong presence across the Doaba region, especially in seats with a high Dalit population. This made the region important for other parties, including the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, which is now trying to strengthen its base here.
Doaba, which includes areas like Jalandhar, has one of the highest Dalit populations in Punjab. Because of this, all major political parties focus heavily on this belt. By launching a women-focused scheme from Adampur, the Mann government is seen as trying to connect with both women voters and the Dalit community at the same time.
The Aam Aadmi Party is also working to build strong Dalit leadership in the region. Leaders like Pawan Kumar Tinu are being projected as prominent faces to connect with the community and expand the party’s reach.
The Bharatiya Janata Party is also focusing on Dalit voters in Punjab. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dera Ballan, a major religious centre linked to the Dalit community, which is being seen as an effort to strengthen the party’s connection with this voter base.
The choice of Adampur shows a clear political strategy. It helps the ruling party:
Reach out to Dalit voters
Strengthen its presence in Doaba
Challenge Congress’ earlier stronghold
