While the official dates of New Zealand Elections 2026 are yet to be announced, it seems like the agendas have already been set. New Zealand hogged global headlines a few days back when Nagar Kirtan of Sikh religious group was disrupted by members of a far-right group in South Auckland, New Zealand.
Multiple videos went viral on social media and it drew sharp reactions from the Sikh community.
According to reports, rhetoric against Sikhs, Hindus, and other religions has intensified in New Zealand. Several individuals and groups are opposing religions other than Christianity in New Zealand.
Besides the Brian Tamaki group, which recently tried to stop a Sikh Nagar Kirtan (religious procession), a page associated with the New Nation Party of New Zealand is also discussing Indian people.
On the "Holy Heck" page in New Zealand, a supporter of Tamaki, who first opposed the Sikh Nagar Kirtan, said that many in New Zealand are against the Haka (a traditional Māori war dance). They don't know what they're talking about, they've gone mad.
The Tamaki supporter said that they are not opposing Sikhs. The opposition is against the waving of Khalistani flags, the creation of two sets of laws in one country, and the increasing number of foreigners.
On another New Nation Party page in New Zealand, Brent Douglas says that whether you support or oppose Brian Tamaki and those associated with Destiny Church who stopped the Nagar Kirtan in South Auckland, they have brought some issues related to Sikhs in New Zealand to the forefront.
Since this is an election year in New Zealand, the atmosphere is being given a religious color. A group associated with Brian Tamaki and Destiny Church is running a campaign against Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims in the country. It is being claimed that several laws have been made in the country because of them. Large temples have been built in New Zealand.
The group claims that even traffic rules have been changed for Sikhs. They are exempt from wearing helmets when riding motorcycles at speeds up to 50 km/h. They can carry a kirpan (knife) with them anywhere. But for the people whose country New Zealand is, there are different laws. The government is giving concessions in the rule.
Supporters said that installing deities on the streets is wrong. They were hoisting the flags of the Khalistan movement, which is considered a terrorist organization in India. You cannot come to this country and bring your country's struggle with you.
