After Independence Congress had a well-established organisation across country and the party's role in India's freedom movement helped it gain public support in Punjab and many other states.
2. Wide voter base
Congress traditionally received support from different sections of society including rural voters, urban voters, Scheduled Castes and minority communities and this broad support base helped it remain competitive in many elections.

1. Strong rural support
Akali Dal built a strong base among farmers and rural voters especially in many parts of Punjab and this support helped it remain a major political force for decades.
2. Regional identity
As a regional party Akali Dal focused on issues linked to Punjab and Sikh interests which helped it develop a loyal voter base.
3. Alliance with BJP
SAD-BJP alliance became one of the most successful political partnerships in Punjab and the alliance combined Akali Dal's rural support with BJP's urban support helping it win elections in 1997, 2007 and 2012.
