New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India(FSSAI) has made the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification mandatoryfor bottled water and mineral water manufacturers to obtain or registerlicenses.

The department FSSAI has given this instruction in a letterto the Food Commissioners of all states and union territories. This directivewill come into effect from April 1, 2021.

The FSSAI stated that under the Food Safety and StandardsAct, 2008, it would be mandatory for all food business operators (FBOs) toobtain a license / registration before starting any food business.

The regulator said that under the Food Safety and Standards(Restrictions and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, anyone can sellbottled drinking water or mineral water only after the BIS certification mark.

BIS license will also be mandatory for renewal also.

FSSAI said that many companies producing packaged drinkingwater and mineral water are working on the license of FSSAI but do not have theBIS certification mark.

BIS certification has been made compulsory for companies sellingground water.
