EURO 2020: Portugal Captain Cristiano Ronaldo Wins Golden Boot with 5 goals

Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored a brace against France and Hungary in the group stages, was unable to lead Portugal past the Round of 16 as they were defeated 1-0 by Belgium.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Portugal, may not have been able to defend his UEFA Euro Championships title, but the Juventus striker did receive some consolation. For scoring five goals and providing one assist, Ronaldo was awarded the Golden Boot, which is given to the tournament's top scorer. On five goals, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United striker was tied with Czech Republic's Patrik Schick but Ronaldo won the award for his extra assist.

Ronaldo lived up to his reputation by scoring in each of Portugal's group stage matches en route to the 2016 victory. Ronaldo, who scored a brace in the group stages against France and Hungary, was unable to lead Portugal past the Round of 16 as they were defeated 1-0 by Belgium. England captain Harry Kane scored four goals and came close to matching Ronaldo's total, but failed to score any goal in England’s heart-breaking loss to eventual champions Italy in the summit clash on Sunday (July 11).

Although Portugal failed to repeat their previous triumphs and go the distance in the tournament, Ronaldo had a great run until his team was eliminated. With his 14th goal, Ronaldo became the all-time leading goal scorer in Euros history. He also tied Ali Daei of Iran for the most goals in international football.
