Gujarat diamond merchant promises houses, cars for Indian women’s hockey team

Gujarat's billionaire diamond merchant Savji Dholakia, to boost the spirit of Indian women's hockey team, has announced that his firm will provide financial help of Rs 11 lakh to members of the Indian women's hockey team who wish to build a house.

The tycoon, who is renowned for lavishing presents on his staff, took to Twitter on Wednesday to announce expensive gifts for the women players if they win a gold medal for the country at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Dholakia said, "With incredible pride in my heart, I take this opportunity to announce that HK Group has decided to honour our Women hockey team players. For each player who wishes to build her dream home, we will provide assistance of Rs 11 lakh."

Furthermore, if the team wins a medal, he promised that other members who already own a home will be given a "brand-new car" worth Rs. 5 lakh.

“The group has also decided to award others (who have a house) with a brand-new car worth Rs 5 lakhs if the team brings home a medal. Our girls are scripting history with every move at Tokyo 2020. We’re into the semi-finals of the Olympics for the 1st time beating Australia,” he tweeted.

India advanced to the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics in women's hockey after defeating Australia on Tuesday. It did, however, endure sorrow in its first Olympic semi-final encounter, losing 2-1 to Argentina. In the bronze medal game, the Indian women's hockey team will face Great Britain.

Many more soon joined in to encourage the squad after his announcement. Mr Dholakia stated, "Dr Kamlesh Dave, my brother's friend from the United States, has pledged to laud all winners with one lakh rupees each."

"I appreciate Indians in the United States helping Indian athletes. This will not only boost our players' morale, but it will also help them perform better in future tournaments," he stated in a series of tweets. "I'd also like to urge my fellow citizens to come forward and support our players. We must motivate them so that they can bring greater honour to our country. Jai Hind!"
