Jasprit Bumrah has been replaced by Mohammed Shami due to an injury in the 15-member Indian cricket squad for the T20 World Cup 2022, starting October 16 in Australia.

Shami had been selected for the T20 World Cup squad as a standby player at first, but a stress-related back issue forced Bumrah to quit the major international tournament, making room for the seasoned bowler.

Though Shami has not played in a T20I since the last World Cup, he played an important role in Gujarat Titan's success in their first season in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He took 20 wickets in 16 games, ranking sixth in the tournament with an economy rate of 8.

Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, and Arshdeep Singh have joined the Indian fast-bowling squad. Before, a number of ex-cricketers and ex-BCCI selectors, including Dilip Vengsarkar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth, expressed their desire for Shami to be included in the team.

In order to fill Bumrah's position, Deepak Chahar was also competing, but his recent injury struggles eliminated him from the race. On October 23, India will play their opening T20 World Cup match against Pakistan.

Indian Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami.

Standby Players: Mohammed Siraj, Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi, Shardul Thakur.

In Group 2 of the Super 12, South Africa, Pakistan, and Bangladesh will compete against India. They will be joined by two more teams from Round 1 of the tournament that kicks off on 16 October.
