Yogesh Kathuniya, a discus thrower, won a silver medal in the men's F56 category at the Paralympics here on Monday, continuing India's winning streak at the Games. In his sixth and last try to win silver, the 24-year-old, a B.Com graduate of New Delhi's Kirorimal College, threw the disc to a best distance of 44.38m.

Yogesh threw 44.38 metres on his sixth and last try to take the lead, but Claudiney Batista of Brazil won gold with a throw of 44.57 metres in his first attempt to dethrone the Indian athlete. Yogesh made a specific note of his mother, as well as his failed attempt.

"I'm happy to earn the silver medal, it was my first Games, and I'm delighted to have won a medal. I only attempted a couple fouls, but I came back to win the medal. I'd want to express my gratitude to SAI, PCI, and especially my mother for her constant support during my journey "Yogesh said to a leading daily, his eyes welling up with tears of joy.

Yogesh got off to a bad start when his first throw was ruled foul, but the Indian para-athlete quickly made up for it by throwing 42.84 metres on his second try.

His third and fourth attempts, though, were both ruled foul. Yogesh, who had previously won a gold medal at the 2019 Indian Grand Prix, came out firing in the final two throws, scoring 43.55m and 44.38m on his fifth and sixth attempts, respectively.

India had won a silver (high jump) and a bronze (discus throw) on Sunday, but the competition was put on hold owing to a complaint. Kathuniya, the son of an Army officer, experienced a paralytic attack when he was eight years old, leaving him with limb coordination issues.

Claudiney Batista dos Santos of Brazil, the defending champion, reigning world champion, and world record holder, won gold with a best throw of 45.59 metres, while Leonardo Diaz Aldana of Cuba earned bronze with a throw of 43.36 metres.

Athletes in the F56 division have complete arm and trunk muscular power. Some people have the capacity to fully push their knees together, which gives them pelvic stability.

Kathuniya took bronze at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai, with a best throw of 42.51 metres, earning him a spot in the Tokyo Olympics.

Several coaches saw his talent when he was at the KMC, and he was soon under the guidance of Satyapal Singh at the Jawaharlal Nehuru Stadium.

He began working with coach Naval Singh a few years later. In his first international tournament, the Para-athletics Grand Prix in Berlin in 2018, he set a world record in the F36 category.
