Angrej - 2015

 ‘Angrej’ is a romantic- drama-comedy film that was released in the year 2015. The story revolves around the life of a simple sensible man Angrej, who belongs to the pre-partitioned era of Punjab. Set in the 40s and written by Ambarpreet Singh, the story depicts the hurdles, problems, and orthodoxy of those times, which people held against love. It was almost like a crime! In such a conservative society, Angrej goes against the conservative society and falls in love with a girl named Maarho. However, Maarho is a little too materialistic and finds another wealthier prospect Hakaam from Lahore to be a better suitor. Dejected, and lovelorn, Angrej, tried to win Maarho, with the help of his friend DhanKaur. However, gradually, he realizes that he wants to be with DhanKaur and not Maano. What follows, is a huge number of battles and disapproves through which the couple fight and emerge to be together.


Directed by Simerjit Singh and with a star cast that includes Amrinder Gill, Aditi Sharma, Sargun Mehta, and a few others, make it an absolute watch! The movie was very received by the audience for its amazing story, screenplay, direction, acting as well as its music.

Ardaaz 2016

Released in 2016, ‘Ardaaz’happens to be one of the most liked Punjabi films of all time. It is a story that beautifully highlights faith, trust, and belief; how one should always keep their social, moral, and religious conduct.

Directed and written by GippyGrewal, it is a movie that is full of positivity with an 8.4 rating on IMDB. The storyline is very appealing and motivating.

The storyline revolves around the arrival of a master named Gurmukh (GurpreetGhuggi), in a new village, as a consequence of his posting, as per the transfers in Government School. Gurmukh realizes that bringing changes into eh village will not be an easy task. He helps the villagers by giving them a morality check and asking them to believe in the good inside them. However, while he is fighting a battle on the outside, he is also fighting a battle on the inside. How to give priority to people first and then to self, while at the same time, coming out victorious over your guilt, is what t eh story is all about. It makes us believe that the impossible is nothing – if you have set your heart on it.

Punjab 1984

‘Punjab 1984’ is yet another exceptional masterpiece to watch out for in the Punjabi movies.

Punjab 1984 is a 2014 Indian Punjabi language period drama film, whose director is Anurag Singh. The movie has an awesome cast of actors which include the much-coveted veteran actress KirronKher and the very famous Punjabi actor DiljitDosanjh. This movie also happens to be the fourth collaboration between the director Anurag Singh and DiljitDosanjh. It was received with a lot of acclaim and an excellent box collection.


The film revolves around the emergency during 1984-1986 during Operation Blue Star as carried out by the Indian Army under the Prime Minister ship of Indira Gandhi. Operation Blue Star tore apart many families in Punjab and gave rise to militancy. The story highlights, the search of a mother, for her son who has gone missing and is being hunted as a militant. The finesse and extraordinary performance by the actors are beyond compare. It is believed to be Daljit's best performance to date.

Jinduaa-2017

With the actors Jimmy Shergill, NeeruBajwa, and Sargun Mehta, leading the star cast, Jinduaa was released in 2017. Set against an international backdrop of Calgary Canada, the story is about a man who wants to get easy Canadian citizenship, by marrying a local woman. The story is a typical Punjabi romantic comedy filled with funny punchlines, drama, suspense. Romance and rib-tickling laughter.

Directed by Navaniat Singh, the movie is a must-watch! It will leave you into splits of laughter and with a happy ending!

With a rating of 6.5 on IMDB, it is one of the most commercially successful Punjabi films of all time.

Sufna – 2020

Sufna (transl. Dream) is a 2020 Indian Punjabi-language romantic drama film written and directed by JagdeepSidhu and Produced by PanjPaani Films. The star cast includes Ammy Virk and Tania.

The film revolves around the story of a young man who falls in love with an immigrant cotton picker from another village. A man who was painless in life, and did not have any responsibilities, undergoes a beautiful transformation when the girl inspires him to become a better version of himself. The movie has an excellent support cast with actors JagjeetSandhu, JasminBajwa and Seema Kaushal . Also, Sufna marks the debut of actress Tania as a lead actress in mainstream Punjabi movies. With a beautiful soundtrack composed by B Praak and the lyrics penned down by Jaani, the movie has a beautiful poetic touch to it. The movie is a subtle serene and sweet love story that leaves you feeling happy from inside.

The Punjabi Film industry has evolved over a couple of years now. From being a light-hearted comedy or completely mainstream films, certain serious movies are being made with a very good script and a perfect fit cast. The performances delivered by the actors are par excellence!
