Afterdays of war with the Indian government, Twitter on Tuesday has finally compliedwith the new IT rules as it appointed an interim Chief Compliance Officer.

The micro-blogging site has also agreed to share the details of the official withthe IT ministry as early as possible.

Earlier,the Indian government had issued a notice to Twitter giving a last chance to “immediately”comply with the new IT rules. The notice also warned the site of losingexemption from liability under the IT Act for its non-compliance.

Likelyafraid of repercussions, Twitter last week had assured the Centre that it is inadvanced stages of finalizing the appointment of chief compliance officer apre-requisite under the new IT norms. The platform even guaranteed to share thedetails of the officer within a week.

ATwitter spokesperson on Tuesday said “the company continues to make everyeffort to comply with the new guidelines, and is keeping the IT Ministryapprised of progress at every step of the process.”

Under thenew IT rules, the digital platforms have been asked to work with more diligenceas they will be responsible for the accounting of misleading content on theirrespective platforms.

As perthe rules, eminent social media intermediaries -- those with over 50 lakh users-- are required to appoint a grievance officer, a nodal officer, and a chiefcompliance officer. Moreover, these officers have to be Indian residents only.
