

Punjab has been witnessing biting cold in the month of January 2026. Lowest temperature in some regions of Punjab have also recorded 0°C. Not only this, but many districts of Punjab are recording lowest temperature of below 5°C for past many days.
Notably, for past 3 days i.e. January 13, 14 and 15, Jalandhar has been witnessing very dense fog. In fact, IMD Chandigarh has also put the district on red alert for severe cold and very dense fog.
On January 16 as well, the city of Jalandhar witnessing biting cold along with dense fog. Guess what! morning in Jalandhar on January 16 turned out to colder than various hill stations.
According to Apple Weather App's temperature readings around 9:45 am, Jalandhar was shivering at 11°C. The city of Jalandhar was also witnessing a thick blanket of fog.
Notably, at the same time, temperature in Dalhousie was 15°C. Temperature in Mussoorie was 13°C. Nainital was recording 11°C.
It means, around 9:45 am, Jalandhar was colder than Dalhousie and Mussoorie, while temperature was at par with Nainital.
Furthermore, around 12:16 pm, Shimla recorded 16°C, while at the same time, Jalandhar's temperature was 13°C.
According to reports, the reason behind ongoing cold conditions in Punjab is due to strong upper-air winds blowing at speeds of up to 230 kmph at an altitude of around 12–13 km, intensifying the chill.
While fog may reduce slightly due to wind movement, a fresh Western Disturbance is active in the upper atmosphere and another is expected to affect northwest India from January 19, possibly bringing clouds, rain and snowfall in hilly regions.
