

Five girls belonging to Punjab have been successfully rescued from Oman and brought back to India with the continuous efforts of Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal. One of the victims, Nirmal Kuttia, upon reaching Sultanpur Lodhi shared her plight. She claims that if Sant Seechewal had not intervened her safe return to India would have not been possible. The victim recounts that she returned to India on December 30 along with the four other girls who also had been trapped in Oman along with her.
Regarding the issue, the Rajya Sabha member Sant Seechewal had earlier written a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs, urging them to look into the matter. The victim recounts that in the month of October, she was taken abroad on the pretext of giving her a bright and better future. But her dreams were shattered as she steps foot in Oman, upon reaching there she got to know that she has been sold for 1200 Riyals (foreign currency).
The victim adds that she was forcibly made to do certain things against her will and mistreated and beaten when she tried to resist. Later when she demanded that she be returned to India she was asked to make a payment of Rs 2 Lakh and two more girls from India in return. Talking about her escape she reveals that she somehow managed to escape, save her life and reached a safe place, where she met around 70 more Indian girls.
The victim sheds light on how it was non-other than her own maternal aunt who trapped her in the mess and left her in Oman, while she herself returned to India. The victim claims that the two months that she spent in Oman were the scariest days of her life, that will haunt her forever.
The victim has appealed to other girls to stay vigilant and do proper research before ever stepping out of the country. She cautioned them about the false agents that make tall promises and ruin their lives in return.
The victim’s family says they got in touch with Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal on December 16, who without wasting any time took up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs and secured their daughter’s safe return within just 14 days.
Talking about the issue, Sant Seechewal says that the exploitation of poor Indian girls in Arab continues to be a big problem and is a worrisome issue that needs urgent attention. He informs that he had written a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs regarding the 70 girls stranded in Oman. His letter was followed by immediate action, prompting the return of five girls to India.
Seechewal shows gratitude to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy, further urging that appropriate action must be taken on the gangs involved in such heinous human trafficking crimes, so that no other girl falls prey to them in the future.
