Punjab’s sprinter Gurindervir Singh creates history at Federation Cup held in Ranchi by setting a new national record in men’s 100 meter sprint and the 25 year old athlete completed the race in just 10.09 seconds becoming first Indian runner to finish 100 meter race in under 10.10 seconds and his achievement has brought pride not only to Punjab but to the entire country.

Following this historic victory celebrations have begun at Gurindervir Singh’s home in Patial village near Bhogpur in Jalandhar district. Since the news of his record-breaking run spread, relatives, friends, villagers and sports lovers have been visiting his house continuously to congratulate the family and a festive atmosphere has been seen in the village, with people calling the achievement a proud moment for Punjab.

12 years of hard work

Gurindervir Singh’s father Kamaljit Singh shared his happiness while speaking to media and said that words are not enough to describe joy the family is feeling after Gurindervir’s achievement and according to him Gurindervir has been working hard for nearly 12 years to reach this stage. He said the journey was not easy but his son remained focused on athletics and continued to train with dedication and now his hard work finally paid off.

A dream come true

Kamaljit Singh also revealed that he himself was once a volleyball player and had dreams in sports during his younger days however he could not reach the level he wanted in his own career so he says it was always his dream to see his son achieve success and bring glory to the country and added that Gurindervir’s achievement has now fulfilled that dream.

Record-breaking performance

Gurindervir Singh’s record breaking performance came during a highly competitive Federation Cup event at Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium in Ranchi, the competition had already created excitement after strong performances in the semifinal rounds. On Friday, Gurindervir clocked 10.17 seconds in semifinal and broke the previous national record however only a few minutes later fellow sprinter Animesh Kujur bettered the timing by finishing in 10.15 seconds in another semifinal race.

Major moment for Indian athletics

This created huge anticipation for the final race on Saturday evening where both athletes entered the track with national attention focused on them and in the final, Gurindervir Singh produced best performance of his career and completed the race in 10.09 seconds creating a new national record and becoming the fastest Indian sprinter ever. Sports experts and athletics followers have described the performance as a major moment for Indian athletics. For many years Indian sprinters had been trying to break into the “10.0-second” range in the 100-meter event and Gurindervir’s timing is now being seen as a historic breakthrough in Indian sprinting.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also congratulated Gurindervir Singh on social media after his victory and praised the athlete for making Punjab and India very proud with his outstanding performance on national stage.

Back in Gurindervir’s village residents said they always believed that the young athlete would achieve something big for the country and many villagers recalled watching him practice regularly and remain committed to training over the years. People visiting the family said Gurindervir’s achievement would inspire many young athletes in Punjab to take sports seriously and work hard for success and with his historic timing of 10.09 seconds, Gurindervir Singh has now written his name in record books of Indian athletics.

His achievement is being celebrated across Punjab as a proud and memorable moment for state and for Indian sports.
