It has often been observed that during heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms, multiple areas of Jalandhar suffer a power outage. Electricity cuts during a thunderstorm are not limited to Punjab; it is a common problem in many states of India.
However, as electricity load continues to rise across Jalandhar city due to the rapid development of shopping malls, hotels, and housing projects, the need for a robust and modernized power infrastructure has become critical.
In order to cater to this demand, the electricity department has prepared a comprehensive master plan for upgrading power lines. Under this new initiative, new electric grids will be established in various parts of the city of Jalandhar.
Outdated overhead wires will be replaced with covered conductors to prevent frequent damage during thunderstorms and rainfall. The upgradation will help address persistent issues related to power supply disruptions during heavy rainfall conditions.
To support the plan, a budget of Rs 4.75 crore has been allocated. The proposal includes the laying of covered conductors, new transformer installations, and modern grid systems. The work orders are expected to be issued this month, with implementation scheduled to begin shortly thereafter.

These regions have been selected due to increasing electricity demand, new construction activities, and consistent complaints regarding power cuts.
As per reports, once the work allotment is done, upgradation efforts will begin immediately. The new systems will be designed to handle high loads and minimize power faults, especially during storms.
Covered conductors are safer and more durable than bare wires. These reduce the chances of the wire snapping or short-circuiting during high winds and rains. New transformers and advanced infrastructure will ensure a long-term, uninterrupted electricity supply.
