Residents in Jalandhar are set to face daily power cuts over the next few days as repair work on electricity infrastructure continues across the city and according to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (Powercom) a large-scale repair drive for power lines has been started due to rising summer heat and this campaign will continue till April 30 while power cuts in many areas will last till April 25.
On the very first day of the drive several parts of the city faced power cuts from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Areas affected included Gurdyal Colony, Sansarpur Village, Salempur Pind, Begampur Mohalla, Central Town, Krishna Nagar, Prem Nagar, Mohalla Gobindgarh, Ladowali Road, GM Enclave, Sarabha Nagar, Green Park, Glenmore Green, Gill Colony, Khambra Adda, Dashmesh Avenue, Mithapur, Basti Danishmanda, Hanuman Mandir, Tanda Road and Prabhat Nagar.
Officials said that residents should be ready for daily power cuts of around 4 to 5 hours in different parts of the city and at the same time the Municipal Corporation has clarified that water supply timings will remain fixed which is from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and no power cuts for repair work will take place during these hours and in case of longer outages an extra one hour of water supply will be provided.
Residents have been advised to keep their inverters fully charged and store enough water as all 640 tube wells in the city depend completely on electricity and do not have generator backup.
Powercom Deputy Chief Engineer Gulshan Kumar Chutani said that this is part of regular maintenance work and during this drive transformers, wires and electricity poles are being repaired or replaced in areas where upgrades are needed along with this he also added that the department has already shared the schedule in advance to help residents plan accordingly.
• April 22 (10:00 AM – 3:00 PM)
Around 75,000 residents affected. Areas include Grover Colony, Ekta Vihar, 120 Feet Road, Rose Park, Dhongri, Sikandarpur, Lesariwal, Jagrava, Mahmadpur, Madhar, Muradpur, Jameel Nagar, Upkar Nagar, Lamba Pind, Khambran, Eldeco Green, Satnam Hospital area, Abadi Dharampura, Aloo Farm, Basant Vihar, Mann Medicity Hospital, Jalandhar Enclave, Krishna Colony, RCF Colony, Glenmore Green Farm, Khambran Church, Model Town, Gole Market and areas along Ladowali Road.
• April 23 (10:00 AM – 3:00 PM / some areas 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM)
Around 1.12 lakh people affected across nearly two dozen areas. Locations include Lasuri Mohalla, Ambedkar Nagar, Badshahpur, Kukki Dhab, Sudama Vihar, Rocky Colony, Residency Vihar and Maksoodpur, among others.
• April 25 (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM)
Around 45,000 people affected. Areas include Abadpura, New Model Town, Jandu Singha Market, Gate Bazar, Thapran Mohalla, Karar Khan Mohalla, Treatment Plant area, Nivia Sports and the Leather Complex.
Officials said the repair work is necessary to strengthen the power system ahead of peak summer demand however people in Jalandhar should be prepared for regular daytime power cuts over the next few days.
