Residents across Punjab are facing long daytime power cuts this week as temperatures rise and officials from the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) have clarified that these outages are not sudden but part of an ongoing maintenance and upgrade drive.
PSPCL Deputy Chief Engineer Gulshan Chutani said that the work has not started suddenly in summer and according to him maintenance has been going on earlier as well including during winter and this is part of a continuous process to improve the power system. Talking about the same he explained that summer is a crucial time because electricity demand increases sharply due to heat. And to avoid bigger breakdowns during peak demand the department is carrying out repairs and upgrades in advance.
Chutani said that maintenance work cannot be done at night and most of the repair work including handling wires, transformers and poles requires proper visibility and safety which is why power cuts are scheduled during daytime hours.
Officials said the department is:
Replacing old electricity poles
Repairing & upgrading transformers
Fixing & strengthening power lines
This is being done to make the system stronger before peak summer demand.
Officials said the current power cut plan is for a limited period and the ongoing schedule is planned for a few days however future outages if needed will be announced in advance.
