
The Punjab Government has declared a public holiday in the entire state to mark Shaheed Udham Singh Martyrdom Day. July 31 is a gazetted public holiday in Punjab.
As per reports, all government offices, government schools and government colleges will remain closed in Punjab on July 31.
Notably, for holiday on July 31 private schools and colleges, is not confirmed till now. However, all government institutions will remain closed.
To mark the day, Punjab Government will rename the Bhawanigarh-Sunam Road to Shaheed Udham Singh Marg. The government has also issued an official notification regarding this.
Punjab Cabinet Minister and Aam Aadmi Party's Punjab President Aman Arora during a press conference said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and party's National Convener Arvind Kejriwal will jointly name this road.
Aman Arora said that Shaheed Udham Singh has made an important contribution to the independence of the country. The whole country is indebted to his sacrifice, which can never be repaid. Udham Singh was born in Sunam.
In such a situation, it was a long-standing demand of the Kamboj community that on his martyrdom day, a holiday should be declared not only in Sunam but in the whole of Punjab, because many camps and functions are organized across the state on that day.
This demand was put forward by Aman Arora before Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and party supremo Arvind Kejriwal, which has been approved. The government has agreed to this and implemented the decision.
Aman Arora further stated that there had been longstanding demands to name the roads from Bhawanigarh, Sunam, Bhikhi, and Kotshamir after Shaheed Udham Singh.
Initially, the demand was made from Patiala, but the road from Patiala to Bhawanigarh comes under the central government.
The formal naming of this road will be done by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and party supremo on July 31.
Arora said that a proposal has been sent to the central government to name the road from Patiala to Bhawanigarh after Shaheed Udham Singh. A case has been prepared in this regard and sent to the Centre and the state government is expecting action soon.
