The Supreme Court of India on Friday refused to grant bail to suspended Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in a corruption case. A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said that the Punjab and Haryana High Court was right in denying bail at this stage and the court noted that some important witnesses are yet to be examined so granting bail now would not be appropriate.
However the top court gave some relief too and said Bhullar can approach the High Court again if the trial does not begin within the next two months. Bhullar had challenged the High Court’s February 16 order which had rejected his earlier bail plea.
Appearing for Bhullar senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi argued that the investigation in the case is already complete and a charge sheet has been filed and said keeping Bhullar in jail now serves no purpose and also added that Bhullar being a senior police officer is not likely to run away.
The defence further claimed that the case is weak and based on unclear evidence and also mentioned the money in question was allegedly received by someone else, and the situation is “not very clear.” Bhullar’s lawyer also pointed out that he has been in custody since October 17, 2025 and is already under suspension.
On the other hand the court was not convinced by these arguments. It said that bail cannot be granted at this stage but allowed Bhullar to try again later if the trial is delayed.
