Political circles in Punjab have been abuzz over reports claiming that former Punjab Chief Minister and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi may resign as the chairman of the Congress party's 2027 Punjab Assembly election campaign committee following a recent meeting with the party high command in Delhi, however, according to Congress party insiders, these reports are not true.

Difference of opinion within the party

Sources within the party have said that while the Delhi meeting did witness differences of opinion on organisational issues, there is no discussion at present about Channi resigning from the campaign committee chairman's post.

The meeting between Punjab Congress leaders and the party high command did take place over two days in Delhi where senior leaders, including K.C. Venugopal, Bhupesh Baghel, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and others, were present.

Party’s prep for 2027 polls

According to party insiders, the meeting focused on strengthening the Punjab Congress ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, where leaders discussed organisational matters, election planning and ways to resolve differences within the state unit.

Channi won’t resign: Sources 

Sources admitted that there were disagreements during the meeting, particularly over the party's leadership in Punjab, however, they rejected claims that Channi threatened to resign or that the high command is preparing for any major organisational change.

Channi unhappy with party decisions

Party insiders said Channi continues to hold the responsibility of chairman of the election campaign committee and there is no indication that he intends to step down. In recent days, speculation on social media and in political circles suggested that Channi was unhappy with the party leadership and could resign from his post, however, insiders described these reports as rumours and said no such decision has been taken.

Congress working on internal conflict

According to sources, the Congress high command wants all senior leaders to work together and avoid public differences as the party prepares for the next Assembly election.
