Most of the areas of Jalandhar witnessed major water-logging on Monday morning after at least 6 hours of continuous heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) of Chandigarh unit had also put Jalandhar and 7 other districts on red alert on Sunday.
The weather department had predicted that these districts will witness very heavy rainfall on September 1. However, the city of Jalandhar was hit by rainfall around 11:30 pm on Sunday night. As the time passed, the rainfall started to become heavier and heavier.
As a result, most of areas of Jalandhar witnessed waterlogging. Even the posh areas like Model Town, Central Town, Defence Colony, Adarsh Nagar witnessed severe water-logging.
Notably, many on social media are already calling it Jalandhar Flood 2025. However, the Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal has appealed the residents to not panic.
Now, the question arises why Jalandhar Waterlogging is being compared to floods in Jalandhar? Well, there are two reasons behind it.
One is water people are sarcastically comparing Jalandhar's waterlogging situation to flood. Specially, at a time whenat least 7 districts of Punjab have been hit by flood.
The second reason is MLA Padma Pargat Singh visited Jalandhar Cantt on Sunday. Heavy rainfall triggered a flood scare in Jalandhar Cantonment constituency after Chitti Bein overflowed near the Jalandhar–Phagwara–Delhi highway. Several villages including Kukkar Pind, Chachowal, Jagral, and Bajhua are facing waterlogging in farmlands, threatening hundreds of acres of standing crops.
However, DC Jalandhar stated that Jalandhar is currently not at flood risk. The next morning i.e. on Monday, Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal said that due to continuous rain for the last several hours, water has accumulated at many places in the city and power supply has also been disrupted at some places.
You do not need to panic, because teams of all the departments of the administration have been deployed and the situation will be normalized soon.
If any person has any problem or there is any emergency, then a call can be made to the control room helpline number 0181-2240064, our teams will reach immediately to help you. Let us tell you that after receiving the rain alert, the DC himself is in the field since late night.
While Talking to True Scoop, Jalandhar Mayor Vaneet Dhir gave two major reasons behind the sudden 'so severe' water logging problem in Jalandhar.
"The first reason is that this time the rainfall has broken the 1988 record. The amount of rain that fell was nearly three times more than the designed capacity of the Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).”
The second major reason, Mayor Vaneet Dhir explained, was related to the Pholriwal STP. "The STP operates on a hotline connection provided by the electricity board. Last night, a fault occurred in this hotline supply. Attempts were made to run the plant using generators, but it could not function at full capacity. Now the plant has started operating again, and gradually, the waterlogging problem will be resolved today,” added Vaneet Dhir.
When asked why even two hours of rainfall causes waterlogging in several parts of Jalandhar, the Mayor stated that the city’s drainage network requires super suction cleaning of the main lines.
"This super suction has not been carried out so far because there were certain objections raised regarding the project. Most of those objections have now been cleared. It will be a project worth around Rs 28 crore, and once executed, it will significantly improve the city’s drainage system,” concluded Vaneet Dhir.
