Auto-rickshaw driver’s son brings pride to Jalandhar with outstanding Class 10 result

The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) declared Class 10 examination results on Tuesday bringing moments of joy and celebration for thousands of students and families across Punjab and in Jalandhar one name that stood out most was Mahesh Kumar Thakur a student of Government School Ladowali who secured top position in district merit list with an impressive score of 643 out of 650 marks. 

Proud & emotional moment

Mahesh’s achievement has become a proud and emotional moment not just for his school but also for his family and his father Sanjay Kumar Thakur who earns his living by driving an auto-rickshaw and as soon as he came to know about his son’s excellent performance he immediately drove his auto rickshaw to school to personally pick him up and this emotional moment drew attention from teachers, students and local residents who praised family’s hard work and determination.

A long journey

Mahesh is also among three students who jointly secured third position in state level merit list and his success story is being seen as an example of how dedication and hard work can help students achieve big dreams despite financial struggles. Speaking about the family’s journey Mahesh’s father said that he has been driving an auto-rickshaw for the last 15 years and during Covid-19 lockdown period the family shifted from Bihar to Punjab in search of better opportunities.

Aspires to become a doctor

Mahesh had studied till Class 4 in Bihar before continuing his education in Jalandhar and said that he wants to become a doctor in future and his father shared that education has always been very important for family talking further he also revealed that his second son is currently pursuing a B Ed degree and according to school staff Mahesh had earlier topped his class in Class 8 as well showing his consistent academic performance over the progressing years.

Other outstanding performances

Apart from Mahesh several other students from Jalandhar also performed well in the examinations: Pavani Kashyap from Shri Dashmesh Convent School secured second position in district merit list, while Prabhnoor from Talwan secured third position meanwhile Doaba region also saw another major achievement as Riya Rani of Guru Harkrishan School Hoshiarpur secured third position in state merit list by scoring 645 marks and achieved an outstanding percentage of 99.23 percent.

An overall decline reported

However despite individual success stories Jalandhar district’s overall performance in Class 10 results has shown a decline this year and the district slipped to 16th position in state rankings with an overall pass percentage of 93.70 percent and according to official data a total of 19,658 students from Jalandhar appeared in Class 10 board examinations this year and out of them 18,419 students passed successfully while a total of 17 students from the district managed to secure places in state merit list including 12 girls and 5 boys.
